What is it? The Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept is a compact coupe that picks up on the production model that disappeared back in 2002. Developed by Toyota Gazoo Racing (hence the GR in the name) the concept speaks to the fifth-generation Supra when it returns to production — the GR Supra continues with a front-engine/rear-drive format and embraces the use of lightweight materials. The concept will be featured in the updated Gran Turismo Sport video game to be released next month.
Why does it matter? The concept makes extensive use of lightweight composite material for the front and rear bumpers, front splitter, rear diffuser, side skirts, louvered hood and oversized rear wing. It rides on BBS racing rims with Michelin tires and features Brembo brakes. The racing thrust is found in the full roll cage, five-point seat belts, quick-release steering wheel and, of course, a racing exhaust. Sadly, little other information was released. One thing that is known is that the production Supra will share much of its makeup with the next-gen BMW Z4.
When will Canada get it? At this point, the GR Supra is pure concept.
Should you buy it? There’s no word yet on when the fifth-gen Supra will grace the road, but it will — or so says the smart money. If the concept’s look carries over into production and it is given the right sort of powertrain, the Supra name will continue to hold some real promise.
